The difference between superhard grinding wheel products and ordinary grinding wheels

The difference between superhard grinding wheel and ordinary grinding wheel Firstly, grinding wheels are mainly composed of abrasives and binders. It is to mix abrasives and binders with other additives, and then perform sintering or solidification processes based on the properties of the binders to produce grinding wheels. That is to say, the difference between diamond and CBN grinding wheels and ordinary abrasive grinding wheels lies in the difference in abrasives. There is not much difference in the material essence among others. The reason why we often distinguish diamond/CBN grinding wheels from general grinding wheels is because these two types of abrasives have the following obvious differences from general abrasives 1、 Different hardness In terms of hardness, GC abrasive has the highest hardness among general abrasives, but it is still only about half the hardness of CBN. 2、 Different grinding effects Due to the different shapes and hardness of abrasives, the principle of grinding and the direction of heat conduction are also different. Diamond/CBN grinding wheels transfer most of the grinding heat to the center of the wheel during grinding, while general grinding wheels transfer to the direction of the workpiece. Additionally, different cutting angles can also result in varying residual stresses. 3、 Different appearances The common general grinding wheel is mostly made of the same material as the entire body, and the entire grinding wheel can be used for grinding from the inside out. However, the super abrasive grinding wheel can only grind the front end of the wheel by about 3-10mm. Generally, the material of the entire grinding wheel is consistent and can be used to grind superabrasive grinding wheels. Only the front end is the grinding layer, and the other parts are usually made of metal material. The main reason for this design is that there is a significant price difference between the raw materials of general abrasives and superabrasives. Super abrasives are relatively expensive, and if they are made entirely of abrasive mixed with binders like regular grinding wheels, there will be a problem of high product unit price. 4、 Differences in repairs If the grinding wheel loses cutting force or the surface shape is consumed, causing the workpiece to be unable to meet the accuracy requirements after grinding, it will be necessary to repair the grinding wheel. The dressing of superabrasive is different from that of ordinary grinding wheels, which mainly use diamonds as the main dressing tool. But super abrasive grinding wheels, because they contain abrasives (diamonds and CBN) with hardness equal to or close to that of diamonds. It will accelerate the wear and tear rate of the diamond trimmer, making it difficult to effectively trim. So in order to cope with this situation, grinding practitioners have developed many other finishing methods, please refer to the attachment. Commonly used are three types of tools: general grinding wheels, metal, and diamond tools. Soft metals such as carbon steel are instead used to repair superabrasive grinding wheels 5、 Workpiece materials suitable for processing have different hardness Super abrasive grinding wheels are not suitable for grinding metals with relatively soft hardness. That is to say, afraid of softness and not afraid of hardness. When using superabrasive grinding wheels to grind hard and soft materials (such as steel without heat treatment), the consumption rate of the grinding wheel will increase. The main advantage of superabrasive grinding wheels will be reduced. Additionally, due to the superior sharpness of superabrasive materials, there is a relative problem of poor surface roughness after grinding soft metals. At the same time, due to the slow design of the self sharpening effect, when soft metal adheres to the abrasive during grinding, it needs to be regularly trimmed. Therefore, considering the above situations, when grinding to soft metal, the performance will be similar to that of a regular grinding wheel, and some characteristics may even be inferior to those of a regular grinding wheel. Overall, the advantages and disadvantages of general grinding wheels and superabrasive grinding wheels are as follows Traditional grinding wheel Abrasive alumina and silicon carbide Advantages: Easy to adjust, easy for operators to handle, easy to adjust the performance of the grinding wheel by changing the adjustment conditions, can grind both soft and hard metals, and has high versatility. Disadvantages: When grinding hard materials, the consumption is fast, the size error is large, and residual stress is more likely to occur, as well as thermal deformation of the workpiece. Super abrasive grinding wheel Superhard abrasive grinding wheel Abrasive CBN/Diamond Advantages: When grinding hard materials, the consumption is minimal, the interval between finishing is long, and it is easy to obtain excellent dimensional accuracy with good cutting force. The workpiece is not easily deformed due to heating. Disadvantages: Not easy to shape, requiring a lot of operational experience (note), not suitable for processing soft metals, low universality. Attention: By adjusting the conditions of the grinding wheel, the performance of the grinding wheel can be changed within a certain range. But because the dressing of superhard abrasive grinding wheels is not easy compared to general grinding wheels, the operator's technical dependence is relatively high. Generally, grinding wheels dissipate quickly, and even with a certain increase in feed rate, it will only reduce the removal rate. However, superabrasive grinding wheels consume slowly, and because most superabrasive grinding wheels are metal inner discs, if the feed rate is increased, sometimes the removal rate may exceed the set limit, causing problems such as overcutting or even tool collision. Therefore, more experienced operators are needed.
